7) I speak English, may I apply in your M.Sc.
or Ph.D. program?
Université de Montréal is a French University. All the courses are
given in French, and for example the mandatory
course « Consultation (STT6530/STT6531) », where
real problems are solved with real clients, need to have a
workable knowledge of
French. Courses at
the graduate level may involve
team projects, and language may become
an issue if a student does
not have a sufficient knowledge
of French. For the
M.Sc. students, it happens that
complementary courses need
to be completed, and all the courses at the undergraduate
level are naturally in
French. According
to the admission rules, the « Comité des Études Supérieures » may impose a TFI French exam. See the links http://www.etudes.umontreal.ca/index_fiche_prog/319410_desc.html
and http://www.etudes.umontreal.ca/index_fiche_prog/219410_desc.html.
Usually, homeworks
can be written
in English, and the students can
even compose their M.Sc. thesis or Ph.D. thesis in English.
Communication with the
advisor may be in English, if he/she agrees. For future students
who want to pursue their studies
at Université de Montréal but who
are not fluent in French, is it
strongly suggested to follow language courses before admission.
French courses are given at the
Faculté de l’éducation permanente : http://www.fep.umontreal.ca/french/
See also the website of the Bureau des Étudiants Internationaux: http://www.bei.umontreal.ca/english/accueil_presentation.htm
The rules may differ according
to the program. For example, the rules may
be different in the mathematic programs.
If you
are not fluent in French and you
want to apply in one of our programs in statistics, it is strongly suggested
to communicate with the person in charge of the program : duchesne@dms.umontreal.ca.
